"The stories goes that Tan-Hsia, a wanderig Ch'an (Zen) monk of the thirteenth century, came to an old deserted temple one cold winter's night. The wind was piercing and the snow falling. Deciding that the best service the Buddha could perform would be to give him warmth, he burnt a wooden temple Buddha. (Tan-Hsia Burning the Buddha Image, painting by Zen Master Sengai, Japan, 18th c. Idemitsu Art Gallery, Tokio.)
